Wendy Carrillo Wants to Unseat de Leon

April 27, 2023

The LA Times reports today that California State Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo will put her hat in the ring in the race to unseat LA City Councilman Kevin de Leon. As the readers of Latinovoterusa.com know, Assemblymember Miguel Santiago had already announced his bid to replace embattled de Leon.

Carrillo has established herself as an aggressive voice for her constituents. De Leon has yet to formally announce his intentions for the 2024 election cycle.

Los Angeles's 14th City Council District has a history of knockdown, drag-out political fights. Those candidates with strong community ties are the winners in these very intense races.

A ballot with Santiago and Carrillo will undoubtedly draw out passionate grassroots voters. So now the question must be asked, is there room for De Leon on such a ballot? Logistically, of course. Politically, probably not. At this point, one has to wonder if de Leon would even make the runoff.
