The Scorecard: The Great Immigration Whiplash!
December 29, 2024 | Mario Solis-Marich
Hey LatinoVoterUSA scorekeepers! This week we're diving into a real head-scratcher: the GOP's immigration promises versus what their billionaire buddies are actually pushing for. Grab the Mezcal, chips and guac, because this one's a doozy!

Republican Party
What They Promised:
Talk about going big or going home! The GOP has been shouting from the rooftops about slashing immigration numbers, with rhetoric that would make the Statue of Liberty need a tissue. "American jobs for American workers!" was the battle cry, with promises to put the brakes on immigration faster than a Lowrider spotting a car meet.
What They Delivered:
Plot twist! Instead of immigration reduction, we've got GOP heavy-hitters Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy doing their best impression of the "How do you do, fellow immigration hawks?" meme while actually pushing for more H-1B visas. You know, those special visas for high-skilled workers that tech companies love more than Silicon Valley loves cold brew coffee. It's like promising to close the club and then sneaking your friends in through the VIP entrance!
Democratic Party
What They Promised:
The Dems came to the table with what we in the business call an "actual plan" - comprehensive immigration reform that would have created pathways for workers across the skill spectrum. No flashy headlines, just old-school policy work (note to Cousin Elon: I know that policy bores you, but stick with me).
What They Delivered:
They actually managed to craft legislation that had enough support to pass - imagine that! A real bipartisan solution that would have addressed both high-skilled and essential workers. But like a Netflix show that gets cancelled right before the finale, Trump stepped in and... well, you know the rest.
Mario's Note: I wasn't crazy about tis plan but hey The Scorecard isn't about me.
Today's Scorecard:
GOP: 0 - Dems: 1
The Republicans get no points from LatinoVoterUSA for what we'll call the "say one thing, do another" dance move. When your billionaire leaders are pushing for more elite visas while your base thinks you're building walls, that's what we call "misinformation". The Democrats score a point for actually getting a comprehensive solution to the one-yard line, even if they couldn't punch it in due to outside interference.
See you next week, folks, where we'll tackle another political promise - maybe something less complicated, like world peace or getting everyone to agree on which Tia is the cool one!
