The Scorecard: Mass Deportations

January 20, 2025

Welcome back to The Scorecard, where we hold our elected officials accountable by comparing their promises to their actual deliverables.

This week we score the promises on mass deportations which, love em or hate em, were promised to begin today!

Republican Party

What They Promised:

The GOP assured there base and then some that mass deportations would kick off on Day One of Trump's presidency. It was going to be a whirlwind of action, with blue states feeling the brunt of the enforcement first. The message was clear: no time to waste in making America "secure" again.

What They Delivered:

Turns out, the only whirlwind we're experiencing is the one of confusion. The GOP's grand plan for mass deportations has stumbled right out of the gate. Trumps plans seems to have been leaked and states like Colorado and cities like Chicago are now buckling up.  Legal challenges are being launched and Trump's ground game is being reevaluated. The leaks have left the GOP's strategy looking like a poorly executed game plan rather than the decisive action promised.

Democratic Party

What They Promised:

Democrats vowed to stand firm against mass deportations. They painted a picture of blue states as bastions of resistance, ready to thwart any attempts at mass removals. The narrative was one of unity and defense against draconian policies.

What They Delivered:

Here's where the plot thickens. While blue states have indeed geared up for resistance, the Democratic narrative has been undermined by a surprising twist: key Democrats in Congress have voted in favor of a bill that actually facilitates these deportations. It's like watching your favorite team score an own goal. The resistance is there, but the mixed signals from Congress have left many scratching their heads.

Today's Scorecard:

Republicans: 0 - Democrats: 0.05

It's a close call, with Democrats eking out a minuscule lead thanks to their on-the-ground resistance, despite the congressional hiccup.

Stay tuned for next week's edition as we continue to hold the political players accountable. Until then, keep your scorecards handy and your eyes peeled for more political plays!
