Texas: 26,000 Rape Related Pregnancies Since Abortion Ban

Since their abortion ban, Texans have experienced an estimated 26,000 rape-related pregnancies. This alarming figure underscores the urgent need for comprehensive policies that protect women's health and rights.

 

When the Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade,  Texas, under the leadership of Governor Greg Abbott, allowed one of the nation's most restrictive abortion bans to be enacted.  When confronted with the potential consequences for victims of rape and incest, Governor Abbott made a bold claim: he would "eliminate rape."

 

However,  grim statistics paint a different picture. Far from eliminating sexual assault, Texas now leads the nation in rape-related pregnancies, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. This unsettling statistic is a stark reminder of the disconnect between anti-choice political rhetoric and the lived experiences of women. 

 

Yet, despite these disturbing statistics, Governor Abbott and the current state legislature show no signs of taking action to address this crisis.

 

The lack of action from Texas's leadership is not just disappointing—it's dangerous. By failing to protect women's health and reproductive rights, the state is effectively forcing thousands of women to carry pregnancies resulting from rape. This not only compounds the trauma of sexual violence but also places an undue burden on women's physical and mental health.
