Spring is Here, But the Latina/o Middle-Class Faces Economic Winter
April 6, 2023
As the US springs forward from the COVID pandemic, the flowers may begin to bloom, but the Latino middle class continues its winter weathering. The pandemic significantly impacted the Latino community in the USA, particularly in terms of their wealth. According to recent studies, Latinos have been disproportionately affected by the economic fallout of the pandemic, with many facing job loss, reduced hours, and depleted savings. These factors have led to a significant reduction in Latino wealth, exacerbating pre-existing wealth disparities.
The pandemic has been particularly devastating for Latino-owned businesses. Many Latino entrepreneurs operate in the service industry, which was hit hard by the pandemic, which forced many Latino business owners to close their businesses permanently. As a result, many Latinos have lost their primary source of income, leading to economic instability.
The economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Latino community in the USA has been profound. According to the Pew Research Center, Latinos were more likely than any other racial or ethnic group in the USA to say that they or someone in their household had lost a job or taken a pay cut due to the pandemic.
The pandemic highlighted the pre-existing wealth disparities in the USA and has exposed the vulnerability of many Latinos in the face of economic adversity. As the USA seeks to emerge from the pandemic and rebuild its economy, it is important to consider Latinos' specific challenges and take action to support their economic recovery.
While the economic stimulus and government investment have been unprecedented, it will not be effective if those dollars do not find a way to Latina/o and other "minority" owned businesses are lost in the shuffle.
State legislators must pay attention to Latino/middle class or find themselves in a decades-long winter of disparity and discontent.
