LVUSA's Scorecard - The Superbowl, Tariffs & Your Guacamole

February 4, 2025

Welcome to this week's edition of LVUSA's Scorecard, where we hold officials accountable by comparing their promises to their actual deliverables. This week, we're diving into the spicy world of tariffs and food prices, just in time for the Superbowl. Let's explore the potential impact of the postponed tariffs on our favorite game-day snacks.

Republican Party

What They Promised:

The GOP, with Trump at the helm, promised to lower food prices. Most Latino Trump voters polled stated that the economy was one of the top reasons that they voted for the President. Voters of all parties and those that had no party preference were tired of high grocery prices. Candidate Trump promised that if he were elected that we would see prices “go down…. real quick”.

What They Are Delivering:

Instead of a touchdown, we could be looking at a fumble. If the tariffs on Mexican imports are implemented after the 30-day postponement, all economists agree that we will  see a rise in food prices, leaving many Latino voters scratching their heads and stretching their wallets. Thankfully the tariff were delayed if not  Superbowl guacamole and the limes in our beers would have skyrocketed right in time for the kickoff.

Democratic Party

What They Promised:

The Democrats painted a rosy picture of the economy, assuring us that everything was just peachy. They claimed that the economy was strong and that we were all set for a prosperous future.

What They Delivered:

While the Democrats didn't promise lower food prices, they did promise a stable economy. And in this case, they seem to be on track. Despite the potential of tariff-induced inflation, the broader economic indicators remain positive. Latino voters, in particular, might find some solace in the overall economic stability, even if their grocery bills could be higher in the future.

LVUSA's Scorecard:

Republicans 0 - Democrats 1

So, as we tally up the scores, it's clear that the Democrats have edged out the Republicans this week. The promise of lower food prices from the GOP remains uncertain, while the Democrats' promise of a stable economy holds firm.

As we look forward to the next round of political promises and deliveries, let's hope for fewer tariffs and more touchdowns. Until next time, keep your eyes on the scoreboard and your snacks within budget!
