Latino/a Unemployment is Downbeat

April 7, 2023

Lost in the blaring trumpets celebrating last month's government data is the downbeat bass of Latino unemployment.

Recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that the Latino/a unemployment rate was 4.9% in March 2023.

While this marks a decrease from 5.9 in February, the number remains higher than the overall population. According to the BLS, the overall unemployment rate in the United States fell to 3.8% in March, the lowest in over a decade.

The Latino community was hit particularly hard by job losses during the pandemic. However, the latest figures suggest that the job market is finally stabilizing, and unemployment rates are gradually decreasing ... for most.

The question remains: What can policy and community leaders do to bring Latino/economic numbers in line with the general population?
