Opinion: Increase Latino Health Deputy Program!
January 23, 2024
In a 2021 survey commissioned by Voto Latino and executed by Change Research, it was revealed that a staggering 51% of unvaccinated Latinos expressed distrust in the safety of vaccines. This figure leaped to an alarming 67% among those who primarily speak Spanish at home. These statistics underscore the urgent need for targeted health education and outreach within the Latino community.
In response to this pressing issue, community health groups in California and beyond are pioneering an innovative approach. They're training teenagers and empowering them to serve as health educators in schools, on social media, and within communities where fears about the COVID vaccine linger. This strategy not only addresses immediate health concerns but also plants the seeds for a healthier future.
Latino Voter USA wholeheartedly applauds these inventive efforts to boost health awareness among Latino communities. Despite making significant strides in many areas, Latinos continue to be chronically uninsured and over-represented in COVID cases, diabetes statistics, and other preventable health conditions.
This innovative approach to Latino health has a silver lining that extends beyond immediate health benefits. There's a strong possibility that these teen health deputies will be inspired to pursue careers in the health profession. This could lead to an increase in the number of Latino doctors, nurses, and other allied professionals, which is much needed.
As of 2021, Latinos make up 18.5% of the U.S. population, but only 5.8% of physicians and 9.9% of registered nurses are Latino. This disparity in the healthcare workforce can contribute to health disparities among Latino patients. By inspiring a new generation of Latino health professionals, we can not only improve health outcomes but also ensure that our healthcare system is more representative and responsive to the diverse communities it serves.
We call on Congress to increase funds for this multigenerational approach within the Latino/a neighborhoods and extend it to other underserved communities.
