FLORIDA DISCRIMINATION: DRIVING WHILE BROWN

April 24, 2023

Apparently, Florida's official discrimination policies go beyond book burning and the oppression of speech and extend to driving while brown.

Recently, a Florida prosecutor's office came under scrutiny after the authenticity of a document outlining a racist policy was confirmed by state officials. The document called for harsher treatment for "Hispanic" defendants charged with "No Valid Driver's License."

State attorney Jack Campbell claimed that a junior prosecutor was responsible for creating and distributing the document and that they have been "reprimanded." Campbell would not detail the reprimand. One must wonder if Campbell administered a wrist slap or if the unnamed junior attorney was sent to bed without dinner.
Even if it was created by someone with a lower rank within the office, a policy like this should never have been allowed to exist, let alone posted on the bulletin board and distributed to staff.
Furthermore, while the document specifically targets "Hispanic" individuals, it is essential to acknowledge that the impacts of such a policy extend beyond one racial or ethnic group. It perpetuates racial profiling and discrimination, which is unacceptable in any context. Any policy that singles out a group of individuals based on their race, ethnicity, gender, or other protected characteristics is discriminatory and undermines the values of fairness and justice that our justice system should uphold.
The California legislature passed the Racial and Identity Profiling Act (RIPA) in 2015. The legislation requires all law enforcement agencies in California to collect demographic and other detailed data for all pedestrian and traffic stops by this year. Collecting data is a good first step. 2023 is the year that Californians can look at and analyze the numbers. The California legislature should publish the findings.
Governor DeSantis says Florida is "where woke goes to die." California should be where freedom and justice find a place to live.

LatinoVoterUSA.com will continue to fight for freedom of movement and the advancement of blind justice.
