Mass Deportation Update

Welcome back to The Scorecard, where we keep score on political promises like cousin Tito keeps track of his borrowed tools. In todays kit: Mass deportation update!

Yup, in order to keep score you gotta keep.... well.. the score.

Republican Party

What They Promised:

Trump's campaign assured Latino voters that deportations would target only undocumented immigrants who are criminals Simple, clean, and targeted. While there were those who warned that this would not be the case a significant portion of Latino voters, especially from the Venezuelan and Cuban communities, took him at his word. 

What They Are Delivering:

The "deportation of legal immigrants" has become the administration's new calling card, extending far beyond their original "criminals only" promise. We're witnessing authorized residents with no criminal records facing deportation. in fact over 22k immigrants currently detained by ICE and the Border patrol have no, none, zilch, criminal records. This policy shift has sent shockwaves through communities where Latino 's once felt secure in their legal status

Democratic Party

What They Promised:

The Democrats promised comprehensive immigration reform and protection for legal residents. They stood at podiums, hands on hearts, promising to be the champions of immigrant rights.

What They Delivered:

Mixed bag! While the "deportation of legal immigrants" continues, the Democratic leadership itself has offered little but rank and file Democrats are facing the headwinds and standing up for immigrants their families and the Constitution itself.  While this is a good sign from the brave congressional reps that are speaking out Latino voters are still waiting for actual action from the party's leadership that could protect our communities right to due process and constitutional order because that what makes us Americans.

One side actively breaking promises, the other side beginning to stir. Remember the Dems had already earned a point in this issue.
