De Leon Hot Seat Just Got Hotter

April 11, 2023
LA politics just got hotter. California Assemblymember Miguel Santiago has announced his intention to challenge embattled LA City Councilmember Kevin De Leon for the 14th district council seat.
DeLeon has "distinguished" himself through his involvement in a racist conversation that was leaked and led to the dismissal of a prominent labor leader and a fellow Councilmember Nury Martinez. Despite calls for his resignation De Leon has refused to vacate his seat. Now voters will have an opportunity to weigh in through the upcoming March 2024 election.
The Los Angeles, 14th Council District, is one of three districts spanning East Los Angeles to Northeast Los Angeles and parts of downtown. The territory has been a hub for progressive Latino politics. Therefore the seat is not only powerful in and of itself; it is important to the political engine that is propelled California from a red state to one that is now deeply blue.
Like many of his predecessors, De Leon now believes that the seat is somehow his and that he is the only one that could lead it. It is clear that he has mishandled the position and disrespected his constituents. It is also readily apparent that he does not fully understand the role that the storied district has played in transforming the Golden State and empowering the voices of the multi-racial and multi-ethnic coalition that feeds it.
Soon the voters will speak, and LatinoVoterUSA.com will amplify thier voices.
