Dallas Shooting Raises Questions for Latino/a's

America's most recent mass shooting underlines Governor Texas Governor Abbott's inability to manage a state and raises some perplexing questions for the US Latino electorate.

 
The murderer who an off-duty police officer killed was a consumer of neo-Nazi and White Supremacist propaganda, according to authorities. As we have seen over the last few years, it is unfortunately not remarkable that mass shooters associate themselves with fascist ideology. What is unusual is that the authoritarian-minded child killer was Latino.

Photos make it clear that the killer was wearing an RWDS patch. "RWDS" stands for "Right-Wing Death Squad," a moniker used by neo-fascists as a nod to Chile's notorious authoritarian leader General Pinochet.

 As the nation grapples with the epidemic of mass murder that has been steadily growing over the last several years, we have the added burden of asking ourselves if we're willing to allow fascism to creep into our community.

Many of us fled authoritarian regimes into Lady Liberty's embrace in search of freedom. Those of us who did not have that experience have come, or our parents came, seeking the promise of a peaceful, prosperous, and stable government. Fascism and authoritarianism, regardless of economic ideology, offer neither peace, prosperity, nor freedom.

While we offer our condolences to the victims of the Dallas shooting, we must also recommit ourselves to the great American experiment that we ran to, were brought to, or were born to.
