This week's Charreada - Pain and Party
June 3, 2022
Sorrow and Chaos
Devastation in the majority Latino/a town of Uvalde, Texas, deepened this week as parents and loved ones buried children in one of the worst mass shootings in American history. Questions swirled about the lack of a proper police response and the handling of the investigation by the Texas Rangers.
Remaining questions:
Will the Department of Justice step up with a robust investigation? Will School police chief and newly sworn-in City Councilman Pete Arrendondo step up and take responsibility, or will he continue to hide and hold his fire? Will the US Senate continue to protect the multi-millionaire corporate gun makers?
Plenty of Punch Left.
What if you threw a party and nobody showed up? Less than 10% of voters have turned in their primary ballots in California, and Democratic officials are worried in the deep blue state. California has an open primary in which the top two vote recipients move on to the General election regardless of party. A dramatic low turnout election can create unpredictable results in the Golden State and lead to unexpected results. Latino/a advocates ask, "Was the guest list too small ?"
Remaining Questions: Will Republicans seize the day in California and take advantage of the stay-at-home Democrats and Independents? Why has the well-funded California Democratic party not been able to figure out Latina/o voter outreach in one of the nation's brownest states?
