Biden Will Not Seek Second Term - Endorses Harris

July 22, 2024

In a stunning turn of events, President Biden recently announced that he will not seek a second term, sending ripples throughout the country. The campaign was unable to overcome concerns about Biden’s stamina as donors closed their checkbooks, and key Senate and House members went from quiet direct supplications to the President and First Lady to loud public calls for him to drop out.

This unexpected development has left the Democrats preparing to choose a nominee at an open convention. At this point, Vice President Kamala Harris has a great deal of momentum. Within an hour of Biden’s announcement, Harris began picking up powerful endorsements from elected officials, signaling a shift in the political landscape.

According to CNN’s Jamie Gangel, Harris is considering several names to pick as her running mate, including Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. This selection process is a critical step in shaping the future of the Democratic party and the country.

Harris's campaign has also seen a significant boost in grassroots donations. Vice President Kamala Harris raised a staggering $49.6 million in grassroots donations for her campaign after President Joe Biden endorsed her, according to campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt. This fundraising feat has been the biggest of the 2024 cycle, as stated by the Democratic online fundraising platform ActBlue.

CNN senior political analyst Ron Brownstein believes a battle for the Democratic nomination is unlikely, citing a “formidable list” of governors and senators already endorsing Kamala Harris. “After going through all of that, it’s just hard to imagine there is the stomach for a full-fledged second fight to bypass her — especially with the candidates who might have the best chance… like Gretchen Whitmer and Gavin Newsom already indicating they won’t run against Vice President Harris,” Brownstein told CNN’s Michael Holmes.

As for her running mate, Brownstein says Harris has two paths: “balance the ticket, or double down.” The most traditional thing to do would be to balance the ticket with a White male elected official from a key swing state, Brownstein said, adding that the list would include Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.
