AXIOS: Latino's 20% of Those Killed By Police
October 10, 2023
According to Axios, Latinos accounted for 20% of all people killed by police between 2011 and 2020.
The startling statistic means that the rate of fatal encounters between Latinos and police officers was 1.33 times higher than for non-Hispanic whites.
The grim statistics are led by Latino men between the ages of 20 and 39 living in the Western United States.
While a cause of great concern, the data is incomplete. The reports only present a partial picture because there is no standardized method to collect data on deaths by law enforcement that is segmented by race and ethnicity.
Many community experts also state that the debate concerning law enforcement deaths and minorities has been, up until now, primarily focused on African American victims. While this focus on Black communities continues to be extremely important, it should not be at the expense of looking at interactions between police officers and all ethnic and racial minorities.
The toll of these statistics is not only the loss of precious lives but also the trust deficit it contributes to.
Latino/a communities need to know they can have faith in the police, and transparency through standardized data is one significant step forward to establishing that trust.
Trust between police officers and community members is essential to public safety.
All parties will benefit from standardized data collection. Current technology makes gathering such information more accessible than ever before LatinoVoterUSA.com calls for its immediate implementation.
