Latino/a Voter Surge!

Despite widespread voter suppression efforts, Latino/a voters are on track to set voter participation records this month.

Despite widespread voter suppression efforts, Latino/a voters are on track to set voter participation records this month.

According to TargetSmart, over 400,000 Latina/o's have already voted in the ongoing general election. The number of ballots already cast is an astounding increase compared to 43,000 that had voted at this time in the 2016 Presidential Election.

There is also ample evidence that the increase includes a sizable number of new and previously inactive voters. Some election experts were concerned that the early voter surge would not be an overall increase in participation. The current participation levels indicate that the fear that early voting would "cannibalize" election day voting is unwarranted.

The turnout surprises many as many states have made it more difficult for Americans, especially those from Latino/a and African American communities, to vote.
